It is important to keep your phone number updated in your Gmail account as it is one of the ways to recover your account if you ever forget the password for your Gmail account or if it gets hacked. Also, having a phone number linked to your Gmail account keeps you updated with suspicious activities such as unauthorized logins, helps you enhance account security (example, two-step verification), and can be a perfect substitute for password login. Therefore, it is suggested to make sure that you keep your password up-to-date in your Gmail account. In case you have a phone number linked to your account which is not in use, you can change it by following the steps provided below.
Steps to Change Phone Number In Gmail
On Computer
1.) On your computer, open a web browser and sign into your Gmail account.
2.) Once you are logged into your Gmail account, click on the Tiles icon located on the upper-right corner of your computer screen. A drop-down menu will appear on your screen.
3.) From the drop-down menu, you will need to click on the Account option. You will be directed to the next page where you will see the Account settings of your Google account, with which your Gmail account is associated.
4.) On the Account page, you will need to click on the Personal info & privacy section. You will be directed to the next page.
5.) On the Personal info & privacy page, go to Your personal info section and click on the Phone option. You will be taken to the next page where you will see your phone number listed.
6.) Next, to the phone number, you will see Edit (Pencil icon) and Delete (Trash icon) option. Click on the Edit option to change the number. On the next screen, you will need to click on the UPDATE NUMBER button located on the lower-right corner.
NOTE: You may be prompted with notification on your phone to allow permission to make changes in the phone number. So, make sure you have access to this old phone number when replacing it with a new phone number.
7.) Then change the number and click on the SELECT option located on the lower-right corner to save the phone number. You will get a notification that your phone number has been updated.
ON ANDROID
1.) On your Android device, go to the Settings app of your device and select Google and then Google Account. You will be directed to the next screen.
2.) On the next screen, you will need to tap on the Personal info option. You will be directed to your Google account’s personal info screen.
3.) In the Personal info screen, go to the Contact info section and tap on your PHONE number. You will be directed to the next screen where you will see the option to change or delete the phone number.
4.) As you wish to change the phone number, simply tap on the Edit option (pencil icon). You will be prompted with a message that “Google needs to make sure that it’s really you. Confirm your screen lock to continue”.
5.) Just tap on the CONFIRM SCREEN LOCK and enter the pin or pattern you use to unlock your device. Then, tap on the YES button (if prompted) and follow the on-screen prompts to quickly change your phone number.
ON iPhone & iPad
1.) On your iPhone or iPad, open your Google Account and go to the “Your personal info” section located under “Personal info & privacy” option.
2.) Under “Your personal info” section, tap on the Phone option and wait until you are directed to the next screen.
3.) On the next screen, you will see the option to change or delete your phone number. To change the phone number, tap on the Edit option (pencil icon), and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process.
4.) If you wish to delete your phone number, you can do so easily by tapping on the Delete option (trash icon). Your number will be removed.
