Steps to Change an Email Password in Mozilla Thunderbird
1.) Firstly, change the password for your email account using the web interface for the relevant email service.
2.) After changing the email password, close the Thunderbird and then open it back.
3.) Now, click on the Get Mail option in your Mozilla Thunderbird’s main toolbar.
4.) Next, click on the Enter New Password option under Login to _failed option.
5.) Then, you will need to enter the new password of your email account under Enter your password for _.
6.) You will need to make sure that you have selected the option – Use Password Manager to remember this password. If you will forget to select this option, Mozilla Thunderbird will not remember this password or save the new password entered by you.
7.) After that, click on the OK button and then select the Write option from the main toolbar. Compose a test email and send it back to yourself.
8.) Then, click on the Enter New Password option under Login to server _failed. Type the new password of your email account under Enter your password for _ on _.
9.) Make sure that you selected the option – Use Password Manager to remember this password. After selecting the said option, click on the OK button
10.) In case you see a Send Message Error message appearing with a notification which states “The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server ___ timed out”, simply click on the OK button and then on the Send option again.

To Remove a Saved Password and Store the New Password
In order to change an email password in Mozilla Thunderbird, you will need to delete the old password which is stored in the Password Manager. Here are the steps.
1.) In your Mozilla Thunderbird program, select Tools > Options from the menu and go to the Security section.
2.) Click on the Saved Passwords…. Option and highlight the account for which you wish to change the password.
NOTE:
- Make sure you have selected the Passwords tab in the Security section to perform this step.
- You may use Search option to highlight the account if you have multiple accounts associated with Mozilla Thunderbird.
- For an IMAP account, you will see imap:// in front.
- For a POP account, you will see mailbox:// in front.
- SMTP accounts can be identified with smtp:// in front.
- Make sure you change the SMTP (sending) mail server password along with the relevant IMAP or POP (incoming) mail server password.
3.) Next, click on the Remove button and hit Close (twice).
4.) Restart the Mozilla Thunderbird and make sure that it checks for new emails automatically. If it doesn’t, click on the Get Mail option or press Shift + F5 keys on your keyboard.
